The main part of a bladderwort plant always lies beneath the surface of its substrate. Most species form long, thin, sometimes branching stems or stolons beneath the surface, to which are attached both the bladder traps and photosynthetic leaf-shoots. The name bladderwort refers to the bladder-like traps; aquatic members have the largest and most obvious bladders, initially thought to be flotation devices before their carnivorous nature was discovered. The generic name Utricularia is derived from the Latin utriculus, meaning wine flask, leather bottle, or bagpipe. Flowers are the only part of the plant clear of the underlying soil or water. They can range in size from 0.2 to 10 cm wide, have two asymmetric labiate petals, and can be of any color. The flowers are often compared with those of snapdragons and orchids, especially among carnivorous plant enthusiasts. Certain plants may produce closed, self-pollinating flowers in some seasons and open, insect-pollinated flowers at other times; some aquatic species have both types simultaneously. Utricularia can survive almost anywhere with fresh water for at least part of the year. The greatest species diversity is in South America, with Australia second. About 80% of species are terrestrial, mostly tropical, while approximately 20% are aquatic. Some South American tropical species are epiphytes, growing in wet moss and spongy bark on trees. Temperate perennials may require a winter dormancy period, while tropical species do not. Some aquatic species produce winter buds called turions, and many Australian species form tubers to survive dry seasons.
